Alabama Constitutional Reform

The effort to revise Alabama’s 1901 Constitution -- now the most amended and longest in the country -- has reached a new level. The following websites have information on this effort:

  • Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform is an advocacy group for a new constitution.  Its website includes the report of the Alabama Citizens Constitutional Commission, papers from a 1995 symposium, and ways to get involved in the effort.
  • Alabama Policy Institute, a conservative think tank, has a statement on the need for reform by constitutional amendments, rather than a convention.
  • The League of Women Voters of Alabama has a page devoted to information on the constitutional revision issue.
  • Professor Susan Pace Hamill has been an outspoken critic of Alabama’s tax system (much of which is written into our Constitution). Her articles on the subject are collected with her short biography.
  • Prof. Joe Sumners of Auburn University has a slide show on the “Alabama Constitution and Economic Development.”
